I am taking part in Moving through May, a distance challenge to raise money for the Kier Foundation, to support the Kier Group charity partner, Action for Children, and a variety of charities chosen by the Kier regions. By making a donation in these constant changing and challenging times you are helping to support the awesome work that charities do, when their services are needed more than ever.

My Updates

31st May - just made it

Monday 1st Jun
So, last day of Moving thru May. Been a couple of weeks off the bike in the hot weather but its cooled down a bit so I managed to get another 43km on my favourite ride over Cannock Chase.
As a consequence, I just made my 100km target.
The picture is of the Commonwealth War Grave site on Cannock Chase. Those who've been to N France and Flanders will be familiar with these dotted around the countryside. But there aren't many in the UK. This one exists because there were large training camps on the chase in 1914-1919 and this is the burial site for those that died in the camp - either from accidents or (mainly) the outbreak of Spanish Flu in 1919. There was also a PoW camp, so somewhat surprisingly, there are more German memorials than there are Commonwealth ones.. A sober, yet attractive site and the flowers were looking at their best in late spring.

Rogationtide

Monday 11th May
Sunday was Rogationtide - the tradition of beating key marker points with willow boughs, to record the parish boundaries.  Since the advent of the Ordnance Survey, maybe we dont need to do that any more, but here in Abbots Bromley, its become an opportunity for a 6km walk around the shores of the reservoir, between the two churches in the benefice of Abbots Bromley & Blithfield, taking in the joys of spring.  And besides, the old parish boundary is now under the reservoir, so without a diving suit, the modern interpretation seems safer and drier.

1st May - Staffordshire Day

Friday 1st May
Its Staffordshire Day as well as the first day of moving through May.
So here's a picture of the High Bridge over the R Trent near Armitage on my pre-May warm-up ride over Cannock Chase at the weekend. The image captures who we are - Structures & Geotechnical as well as being on the move in May, in Staffordshire.

For those wanting to know more, it was cast in MCCCCXXX by the Coalbrookdale Company and is a grade II* listed structure. Its no longer open to traffic owing to a weight restriction and subsidence from the nearby Lea Hall coal mine.
