FAQs

What is Moving through May?

add remove

It’s the Kier Foundation’s annual active challenge.

It's free to sign up, go it alone or join a team, you can choose your own activities, running, walking, cycling or swimming. You can choose from a set distance target, or choose your own - your challenge, your way!

With your help, we want to raise £100,000. This will be split between local charities chosen by our businesses and the Kier Foundation, to support the Group charity partner and the variety of charities through our match funding scheme.

What activities can I take part in?

add remove

Anything that measures your distance. If you use a wheelchair or another mobility aid, as long as you have a distance tracker, you can still measure your distance.

How do I sign up?

add remove

Just click on the 'register' button at the top of the page. If registering a team, you will need to create a team page, once created you can then send all team members a 'join my team' link to register.

Here is a quick video guide to help you.

How do I create my team?

add remove

There are a few ways to create a team. The most straightforward is to choose a team captain, who is responsible for creating the team page on the platform. Once they’ve registered themselves, they can create a team page and invite team members to join.

You can follow this link once you've registered:
https://www.kierfoundation.org/login/createteam

What will your team name be this year?

Note: you can keep the team private, or allow anyone to join.

Who can join my team?

add remove

Anyone you like - friends and family or business contacts, including sub-contractors, suppliers or colleagues. You will need to create the team on the platform and then invite members to join the team.

How many teams can join from my business?

add remove

We want as many Kier people to join this challenge as possible, so there is no limit to how many teams can join from a business division, but an individual can only join one team. You can also go it alone if you want!

Can I have more than six in my team?

add remove

Yes, absolutely - the more the merrier! Team distances won't count on our leaderboard this year, but you can absolutely cheer each other on to smash your individual goals this year!

Do I have to be in a team?

add remove

No! It's entirely your choice whether to join a team or go it alone.

How do I join a team?

add remove

You can click on the 'join us' button on a team page that has already been created.

Alternatively, the team captain needs to invite you to join the team by sharing a link to the team page with you. Click on that link, set up your individual page, if you haven't done so already, and then join the team.

Can I be in more than one team?

add remove

No! As popular as you are you can only be in one team as your kilometres and fundraising counts towards your team total.

How do I track my distance? Do I need any special equipment to join in?

add remove

You can use your phone or smartwatch to log your activity, steps or distance covered. You can also use a map or an online route finder site to work out the distance covered and log it manually if you wish.

If you already use a Fitbit, Garmin or Mapmyfitness app, you can easily sync your account with your fundraising page so it will automatically keep track of your activity for you. Strava is also an option, however they have changed the way they work with charities and only offer a certain number of uploads at any one time. If using Strava please check your distance has been synced. If there is a data loss you can manually add your distance to your Moving through May page.

Please note, if logging in via social media, this will need to be done on a personal device, due to Kier restrictions.

Activity tracking is live once your app is synced. All distances synced in April will be cleared back to 0 ready for when the challenge starts on 1 May.

What if I don't have a distance tracker?

add remove

We understand not everyone has access to a distance tracker. We have a useful guide that will help you convert a wide list of activities to steps.

Simply multiply the number of minutes you participated in an activity by the number of steps indicated in the pdf here

Upload your steps in your fitness activity section.

Note: All conversions are estimates.

Why do I have to evidence my distance?

add remove

Even though this is a personal challenge, we will have the Wall of Fame and the Moving through May awards. To make it fair for all involved we ask that you track your distance and keep evidence, especially if manually uploading, as we will spot check every so often and will require evidence from anyone due to receive an award.

Why isn't there a leaderboard for distance this year?

add remove
This year is all about you versus you, and we want everyone to feel encouraged to beat their target, whether that is 50km or 500km!

By swapping the leaderboard for our wall of fame, we're recognising the brilliant efforts of everyone who's challenged themselves to get moving though May, and smashed their target!

Can I link my Apple watch to my Moving through May account page?

add remove

Unfortunately you can’t link the fitness on an Apple watch to the account. You can however use the free Map my Fitness App, which links to your iPhone and Apple watch.

Just download it from the App store to your iPhone and it will add to your Apple watch too. Once set up with the app, you can then connect to the ‘Map my Fitness’ option on your Moving through May page and it will automatically upload your distance from your saved activity from 1 May.

If you prefer to just use the fitness activity on Apple then you can manually add your distance/steps to your fundraising page each day.

How often should I upload my distance?

add remove

If you are unable to upload your distance on a daily basis then please ensure you upload within 5 days of your activity taking place. We have live tracking operating throughout the challenge and to keep it fair for all participants you must upload your distance frequently.

You cannot upload your total distance for the month in one go at the end of the month. Anyone doing this will be disqualified.

Distance uploads will close on Monday 3 June.

Do I have to raise a set amount?

add remove

No. There is no minimum or maximum amount, although we are encouraging each individual to raise at least £25 so collectively we can raise an amazing amount for your chosen charities!

There are some useful ideas to increase the amount raised here

Where is the money raised going?

add remove

It will be split 50/50 between local charities chosen by our businesses and the Kier Foundation, in order to support the Group charity partner, currently the Trussell Trust, and charities across the UK via Kier Foundation match funding and other schemes.

How are the local charities chosen?

add remove

Each business unit can choose up to three charities per business unit/region which is led by their Moving through May project team member.

If no local charities are chosen, the money raised will be donated to the Kier Foundation, and charity partner - the Trussell Trust.

How can people sponsor me or make a payment?

add remove

Simply give them the online link to your individual or team fundraising page, where they can leave a personal message (if they wish) and donate via their credit or debit card. It really couldn’t be easier.

Ideas for increasing your donations can be found here.

What if a client or supplier would like to sponsor us or donate?

add remove

Please contact the Kier Foundation who will then be able to arrange for an invoice to be raised and sent out to them directly.

Are there prizes to be won?

add remove

Yes, across the Group there will be a variety of prizes up for grabs!

The Awards event will be held on Thursday 20 June in Birmingham.

I’ve only just found out about this challenge and I want to take part. Can I still sign up after 1 May?

add remove

Absolutely, it’s totally OK to be late to this party! You can join in whenever you like but obviously, the earlier the better. That way you’ll be in with a chance of winning a prize and maximising your fundraising efforts and distance covered.

Where can I find distances covered in last years Moving through May?

add remove

If you have a question that is not answered above please contact us at the Kier Foundation at info@thekierfoundation.org and we will assist you.
