On Friday 17 June the SWDSC Kier Highways Environment team organised and ran a beach clean at Sand Bay, Weston Super Mare. The environment team were joined by other members of the Kier Highways team, as well employees from National Highways, R&W Civil Engineering, AC Landscapes and Treeworks, and Chevron Traffic Management.
22 intrepid volunteers took to the beach on one of the hottest days of the year, on the lookout for all things litter. It was ran as part of the ‘million mile clean’ hosted by the charity Surfers Against Sewage.
Surfers Against Sewage is a national marine conservation and campaigning charity that inspires, unites, and empowers communities to take action to protect oceans, beaches, waves, and wildlife.
In just under three hours of roaming, the team managed to fill 10 of the large litter sacks with all sorts of litter, from tiny plastic pellets to BBQs and fishing tackle. It was a really enjoyable and rewarding way of using a volunteer day and a fantastic reason to get out of the office.
Patrick Lloyd, Environment Specialist – Kier Highways, said “It was a fantastic day out. We even had the weather on our side! Hopefully everyone shared my sense of achievement after doing some good for the environment and community. Members of the public we came across were very complimentary of our efforts which made it even more worthwhile. A massive thank you to everyone who turned out and got stuck in for a fantastic cause, all your hard work was really appreciated.”
